The Real Story

Two startups, zero exits,
infinite learnings

I'm a backend/systems engineer who builds in Rust (Axum, Tokio, SQLx) and Node.js. MakeClient was my second attempt at building a SaaS product — the first was Winqroo, an AI-powered content intelligence & influencer marketing platform. Both taught me different things.

MakeClient was built for CAs, accountants, and tax consultants in India — with REST APIs, RBAC, document workflows, billing, and compliance tracking. We had the product, we had paying users. But we didn't have product-market fit. After 6 months, I made the hardest call: shut it down.

Honest Post-Mortem

Why It Didn't Work
(& what I'd do differently)

Building MakeClient was the most educational failure of my career. Here's the raw truth about why it didn't find its place in the Indian market.

Over-engineered for the wrong problem

I built for what I thought the market needed — a full platform with every bell and whistle. In reality, small Indian CA firms wanted a simple WhatsApp + Excel replacement. I gave them Salesforce; they wanted a shared notebook.

Talked to 300+ people — still got it wrong

I walked into 120+ firms, interacted with 75+ CAs and 50+ accountants. But asking people what they want and observing what they actually do are very different things. They said they wanted a “platform” — what they meant was “something simple that just works.” I translated their words into my assumptions.

Pricing mismatch

Indian CA firms operate on razor-thin margins and are used to one-time payments for software. My SaaS subscription model was a non-starter. I should have started with a freemium or a lightweight free tier to build trust and habit.

Trust deficit as a newcomer

Finance firms are cautious by nature. They trust established names, peer referrals, and proven track records — not a landing page from an unknown founder. I was a solo builder trying to sell enterprise software without a reputation in the industry. In a market built on relationships, I had a product-led strategy.

Key Takeaway

“Your job isn't to write code. Your job is to solve a problem someone will pay for.

I learned that a working product is table stakes. The real challenge is distribution, trust-building, pricing, and truly understanding your customer's daily reality. I'd gladly trade 50% of my code for 5 more honest conversations about why they actually said no.

Silver Linings

What Failure Taught Me

Two startups, two shutdowns. But every miss is a lesson — here's what I'm walking away with:

Systems & Backend Engineering

  • Built production async backends in Rust (Axum, Tokio, SQLx) and Node.js
  • Designed REST APIs, JWT auth, RBAC, and MySQL schemas for billing, tasks, documents
  • Self-hosted production: Docker, GitHub Actions, Nginx, AWS Linux, Redis sessions
  • Built for a govt system serving real employees (Ministry of Energy, AP)
  • Distributed systems patterns: SELECT FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, atomic Redis rate limiting

💬 Product & Business

  • Product-market fit > features. Build for the market, not your ego.
  • Customer discovery is continuous, not a one-time activity.
  • GTM strategy is as important as the product itself.
  • Know your market's willingness & ability to pay before building.
  • Ship fast, ship small. Perfect is the enemy of shipped.

Both products are no longer active, but the code and learnings live on.
